I assume the obvious LIFE term isn't the answer you're looking for as that could be from 1day (if killed on that day) to 50 years (if killed or died due natural causes or the gas chamber, etc.)
My guess is the total number of years a single prisoner served defined as either longest or largest in number. I was interested in the answer but even with some research I was unable to find a definitive source to provide a specific answer. I checked both state, federal & military prisons.
The best answer I could tie down was Robert Stroud, aka The Birdman of Alcatraz (AZ#594). Convicted of a 1909 murder (he was a pimp and killed the guy who refused to pay for services) and convicted in 1911 and sentenced to death. He spent time at some lesser prisons serving 37 years (all in islolation) before being sent to The Rock where his sentance was commuted to life in prison w/o parole. He died there in 1963 having served 52 years.
I saw the information about Winston "Sweet Blue" Jamesworth but when I checked it out all my seaches came up...no information available. I would be interested in the members serch technique and souces for my own edification.
I have little doubt someone has spent more than 52 years in prision, but I couldn't ID who it was.

Do you mean the actual time served, or the length of the sentence itself? If it's the length of the sentence itself, it has got to be many hundreds of years. Here's some stuff I found:
"The Longest Prison Sentences. "The longest recorded prison sentences were ones of 7,109 years, awarded to 2 confidence tricksters in Iran (formerly Persia) on June 15, 1969. The duration of sentences are proportional to the amount of the defalcations involved. A sentence of 384,912 years was demanded at the prosecution of Gabriel March Grandos, 22, at Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on March 11, 1972, for failing to deliver 42, 768 letters."

The longest prison sentence ever belongs to Winston "Sweet Blue" Jamesworth, who was convicted of murder in 1904 in Alabama at age 18, and served a life sentence until his death in 1982.
