Kitten are now spayed and neutered in most shelters across the US at two months if they weigh two pounds at that time.
A cat can have a first heat cycle when she is five months old. Don't let a vet talk you into waiting until your cat is six months. Ask him if he has read the Winn Foundation report on early spay/neuter. If he says he hasn't or has never heard of it he is way out of date. Read it yourself by entering a search for Winn Foundation
Four months is a good compromise, although the younger the cat the easier and faster the recovery. I see little shelter kittens up and playing with their littermates 24 hours after their surgery.

Mine was maybe 3-4 months when she got fixed. She looked so pathetic with the staples in her belly and the bandages on her little pawsies!
I see a lot of people are posting that this wasn't too young to fix her. One thing I notice with her that I never noticed with any other female cats is that she seems to have periods of mild "heat" not to the point of needing to go outside, but she rubs her butt on everything and gets more vocal than usual (nowhere near like an intact female would, but it's a noticable change) My theory is that this has something to do with her being fixed young, and possibly some hormaone tissue being missed?

Many vets are doing early spays now... at around 2-3 months, even. Depends on the vet.

As early as 8 weeks, but sooner than 6 months. 4-5 months is ideal

The normal range is six to nine months of age – surgery can be done earlier and of course later although with later surgeries you run the risk of an unexpected pregnancy.
