It depends.
But...
Have your friend call the humane society. They often do lifesaving surgeries, or farm them out, for reduced costs.

Of course the price depends on what type of surgery is needed.
Listen, if they can't afford the surgery, their pet does NOT have to be put down. Here are three much better options that anyone that cares about their pet in this same situation should try first:
1. Most vets will work out a payment plan for high priced procedures. They can ask. They could pay a smaller monthly bill until the total bill is paid off. Often vets will do this interest free.
2. If their vet won't do a payment plan for the surgery, call around. Other vets may be more flexible, or offer the same procedure at a cheaper price.
3. Go to this web address:
www.imom.org
They can help PAY for the needed operation if there is a financial need. That is what their organization is for...so that animals that could be saved won't have to be put down just because their owners cannot pay for an operation.

Depends what kind of surgery, depends what veterinary practice you use. This is why it's always a good idea to have insurance. My cousin's dog was hit by a car when she ran away from another dog and tried to run home. Her life-saving surgery and aftercare ran into thousands of pounds (twice as much in dollars) and my cousins said they would have had to have her put down if they hadn't had the insurance.

What kind of surgery are you talking about. There are MANY different surgeries that can be done on animals and the costs vary. Be more specific

Oh, that's really sad, if there on benefits then the PDSA should be able to help them, do they have a regular vet that they have always used for their dog, if so they should be pretty sympathetic and give your friends an extension on payment, we paid £249.59 for a biopsy and blood test for our dog yesterday, so I sympathise with your friends as our dog isn't very well either and even having paid this amount it still isn't looking good, there has to be someone out there who is willing to see there dog for either a very nominal charge or for free, get them to ring the PDSA and hopefully they should be able to help or put them in touch with someone who can, good luck.

depends on what the surgery is, but if it's life threatening chances are it will cost a bunch. It also depends a lot on the part of the country you live in (ie rural vs urban)
