How do you know when it's too much? What should I do?

My boyfriend and I have been together since March. He's a little insecure, and I made a promise to him that I would never be in the same room as my ex. But now my two best friends are having a going away party because they're moving, and he's going to be there. I don't want to go and say goodbye, but i don't want to break a promise. What should I do? Is he asking too much?

Say goodbye outside, then you won't be in a room. Otherwise, just ask him before you go to the party, or even have him come along to guard you.

Or, just dump him for being too controlling.

There isn't much that's more unattractive than an insecure jealous man. Your boyfriend should try to be a little more confident and know that he has your attentions and heart and would never stray even if presented with the opportunity (whether it be true or not). The promise you made to him about your ex was a foolish one simply because you can't control the whereabouts of other people. You should be able to be there to say your goodbye's to your friends and have your boyfriend's trust all in the same breath. This situation is way bigger than just being in the same room with your ex. This is a trust issue. Maybe you guys should sit down and talk about the foundation of your relationship. Tell him he can go with you, he should be understanding. If he won't let you go, then I'd go anyway. I don't usually say break promises but your friends are there always, and Bf come and go.

It's good that you are at least considerate of his feelings. Explain the situation to him, and let him know that you're going to the party for your friend, not to see your ex. Don't let others determine how you live your life.

Be very careful this could be a sign of control. you should tell him that you want to see your friends off and tell him your ex will be there. this shouldn't be a big deal but you should pay close attention to his reaction. overreacts... cut your losses... OK with it but has restrictions...still be mindful of the control factor. OK with no complaints.... go have a good time!!
