I get real bad cramps when I run that slow me down and not let me do as much as I really can. Are there any tips out there that can help me? I have to run a mile Saturday.

Cramps usually occur for one of two reasons: 1) Dehydration, or 2) Lack of oxygen. So, make sure you drink plenty of water before running, and be sure to breath well while running. One trick is to breath through both your mouth and nose at the same time, to allow more air flow. Don't over do it though; breathing harder than natural can actually decrease the amount of oxygen going into your system (think hyperventilation).

I'm not sure about prevention, but it helps me to stretch an arm way overhead while running, as soon as a cramp comes on. It looks a little foolish, but feels so much better after a few seconds.

Where are the cramps? Legs, sides back?

Stretching, hydration and proper diet all help. Also taking deep breaths through your nose helps relieve them, I have been told that this provides more oxygen rich blood faster than breathing though your mouth.

Do at least ten minutes of proper stretching, eat reasonable and not junk food or sweets, remain hydrated, and start off slow then move fast near the end. Good luck!!

A mile? That won't be too bad actually. If you start getting cramps while running just breathe through your stomach rather than your chest if that makes sense.

A lot of females have a chemical/hormonal imbalances that magnifests itself when you run. As weird as it sounds birth control pills help a lot because they regulate your bodies chemical system. Also drinking a lot of water and taking a multivitamin can help too.

Stretch a lot beforehand. And I've heard that eating bananas help because of the potassium.
