Yes, they do. It is not that they necessarily *kill* them, it is the odor that keeps them away.
We have 10 cats who would probably not even know what to DO with a mouse, but we've never had mice in the 18 years we live here. We live in a rural area and I've seen them outside, but never once in the house.
Oh - and by the by - years ago we had dogs, and we ended up with mice. I hate to kill anything but when one moved into the kitchen and sat on the stove thumbing its nose at me, I decided that was IT - I was getting a CAT! Called the local humane society and when they told me they actually had a bluepoint Himalayan there (I'd wanted one for years), I grabbed my son and practically ran out the door.
As I was driving home home with this cat "for my daughter" who also wanted a cat, it occurred to me that I'd just adopted a DECLAWED cat! What was I thinking???? Nevertheless, that cat surprised me & was actually a great mouser. She killed three of them in three days, and we never had a problem again.
P.S. Never declaw your cat.

Yes -- just the smell of a cat will normally keep mice away. The cat doesn't actually have to catch them. I started taking my cat Rosie to my local pub about three years ago when she was a kitten (I go about three times a week). Before I started taking her, they had a problem with mice in the basement, particularly in the winter. Since Rosie started visiting the mice no longer appear, and she's never even been in the basement.

If your cat likes to chase things, yes they will keep the mice out of your apartment. If the cats just sit around, chances are they won't kill the mice.

No. An apartment cat is too well fell to eat mice,. But it may catch, play, and possible kill mice and then present them to you as a gift; and then only AFTER the mice are already in the apartment. So the correct answer is NO, cats can only control mice that have already entered your apartment.

I live in a townhouse that has a garage that serves as home to a family or two of mice over the winter. I've been here 7 years, and only had one that ventured into my house. He didn't make it out alive. I'm not sure who, but one of my (7) cats got it.
