First of all - it's usually the practice nurse that performs the cleanse or syringe.
You'll get varied responses depending upon which health professional you ask. My ears were syringed but my partner was given ear drops (at the same health centre). The syringe was almost painless, in fact it tickles. It's not a "needle", it's like a mini water jet with a warm water soluble solution. It worked brilliantly. Not all doctors advocate the syringe method though - some prefer the drops.
One thing's for certain - DO NOT be tempted to put things (implements) in your ear, however benign, because A) You cannot see what you are doing B) A perforated eardrum is not funny C) You have no idea what you are doing D) you won't realise that you've caused unintentional damage until it's too late.
It's one of the most sensitive pieces of audio equipment anyone will ever own - would you poke around in a £20,000 speaker system with a cotton bud with your eyes closed?
Also, if you are in the UK, stop dicking about with Yahoo answers and call NHS direct 0845 46 47. That's what they are there for - it's one of the best public services we have.
You will find many of the saline ear solutions are meant to keep clean ears clean. The oil based drops are better as they work to soften the wax. You may need several applications before the wax softens, so you shouldn't expect to clear it in one go.
One other preventative measure is to get a routine dental checkup, as sometimes ear problems can be an early indication of dental decay.

You could try Hopi Ear Candle treatment - luxury to get it done professionally. Many massage practtioners will do this for you as well or instead of a massage.
Or if that's too expensive, you can buy ear candles.
Or try some warm olive oil in your ears - aply with cotton wool and let the wax go right inside. Do this every night for a week.
If that fails - go and see your doc. It isn't as bad as you think having your ears syringed, and it is horrible having wax in the ears.
Hope this helps.

the best way to do get rid of this is use bicarbonate of soda, you can by this ready made up in a bottle which u by from most chemists, its great better than olive oil, all olive oil really does is soften the ear wax ready for your ears to be syringed by a doctor. but you should really go to your doctor because if you end up pushing the ear wax in deeper omg your in trouble. good luck

Take a suction tube and fill it with warm water lay your head over the sink and flush your ears really good and do it several times in each ear and that will flush out the wax. Believe me it works real good I have had to do that for years.

Hopi ear candles. They work by drawing out the wax and are safe. Some beaticians do the treatment now or you should be able to buy them from health stores like framar health. It doesn't hurt either... bonus

A few drops of hydrogen pyroxide into the ear canal, while you hold your head to the side, or lay on your side...wait a few minutes, then turn the ear the other way to drain it, wipe the ear clean. Repeat.
Or use a chinese ear candle.

ear candles. they are sold at most health stores. The are very relaxing and take all the crap out of your ears. Just don't do them too often. Once you try it you will love it.
