It is the right of parents to rear their children according to their own beliefs until those children become adults. I may not like their faith, but I respect that right.

Although in the ideal world, people can choose their own lifestyles, I suppose it is inevitable because humans are very social creatures who feel the need to share (and impose) their own beliefs as a sign of power.
Perhaps this practice is cruel; we would not know, since "brainwashing" has been occuring for all of history. Because children are extremely impressionable, they pick up everything from their surroundings as children. Because human beings must raise chidren (and humans are flawed), they are bound to convey their religious beliefs to the children, just like they do with language.
Seriously, almost every habit and thought a person exhibits was originally absorbed from his or her environment. If "brainwashing" did not occur, there would be no prejudice on one hand, but no language or culture on the other.

No! I think it`s more cruel of society to brainwash parents and children to believe all the `ills` of the world are the blame of a new defect in children called `ADHD`. The world I see about me is degrading of religion and without the moral`s the bible set`s out for us what hope is there? Parent`s should look to the bible more often. I`m sure we would have less cases of `ADHD`!

I guess that depends on the society and the religion. Parents have a responsibility to instill morals in their children and often religion is the method. If they are being "brainwashed" to be generous, loving and tolerant, thats not so bad. If they are brainwashed to hate then thats a different story. Just my opinion....

Is that as opposed to the socialist brainwashing they get in public schools, where everyone brings their supplies and donates them to the community instead of having individual responsibility to take care of your own needs? How many people have been through that in the last few days?

I'd be more afraid of a society that does not allow freedom of religion. I can see your point that it might not necessarily be fair to a child who has spiritual beliefs imposed upon them. They certainly don't know any better and can't truly decide for themself, but if they have a shred of intelligence, they will come to a point where they might scrutinize the tenets of their faith and come to their own conclusions.
Until that day, the moral values imposed by most religions usually do far more good than harm. Please peek at this website and judge for yourself whether or not instilling moral vaules via religion is such a bad thing....

We are a society that has religious freedom. As such, people raise their children in the beliefs that they want to raise them in.
Who is to say that your religious path or lack of religious path is better or worse than anyone else's?
Personally, I have raised my children Unitarian Universalist, and thus have taught them religious tolerance. They are able to chose their own spiritual path without me shoving any one religious faith down their throats. They have experienced a number of religious rituals of Christian, Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, Native American, Pagan and Muslim paths. They have been exposed to the meanings and beliefs of many faiths and understand that there is no "one right way". We may all walk a different path, but we all end up at the same place in the end.

We believe in God who is of peace and is love and all you do is blame us for starting wars.............
