He is fiction copied from Zoroaster's religion in Persia. This had a divine war between good Ahuramazda and evil Ahriman. Hebrews saw it's neater to have separate sources of good and evil than to have God responsible for both, so they copied Ahriman and renamed him. Read carefully, and you see that God sent both good and evil before Lucifer the Satan or Devil was invented. Some Bible passages were rewritten, so there is the contradiction of having God do something in one part but having Lucifer do it in a later part.

The Bible doesn't tell us exactly what the devil looks like; the pictures you see of him (with horns and a red suit and so forth) simply come from the artist's imagination. Similar pictures have been around for hundreds of years, however, and were meant to warn people about Satan. Satan is evil, and even these pictures should warn us not to have anything to do with him.
Satan, the Bible says, is totally evil—and yet he can disguise himself so people don't even realize who he is. In fact, the Bible says that sometimes "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14, KJV). Satan's goal is always to stop God's work. He tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross for our sins, and he will try to keep you from God.
Satan is real—but don't concentrate on him. Concentrate instead on Jesus, because He is stronger than Satan, and by His death and resurrection He defeated Satan. The Bible says, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work" (1 John 3:8). Ask Jesus to come into your life today because God loves you and Jesus wants you to walk with Him every day.

I definitely agree with you on this one, I think that religion was made up to scare people and keep them from doing horrific acts. Just look at the Bible, the books in the Bible are written 500 years after Jesus' death...its more of an urban legend than a religion to me. The Bible, the world's best-selling book, is also the world's most shoplifted book. How does that figure?
I dont think Satan is any more real than the boogieman living under ones bed or the tooth fairy. There is no factual evidence to prove that he did exist, just a bunch of bored guys writting a story. I just cant believe in anything that I cannot see...

satan, according to the Bible, means: adversary. Specifically those who are adversed to the Lord and his ways.
lucifer is the angel that fell from Heaven. Caste out by God. He was from the order of angels known as the Seraphim. Angels that burn with fire for love of the Lord. When it was revealed to them that God was to send his son Jesus to the Earth in the image of a man. That that man was to become King of Heaven and Earth, and that his mother Mary, was to become Queen of Heaven and Earth. That two human beings, creations who were considered lower than angels were to rule over the angels... Well, Lucifer rebelled. Some went with him, some obeyed God.
Now, is this "mythology"? That depends on what you believe.
However, if you think the devil isn't real, and isn't working in this world everyday..... You better wake the f up. He's real and he's all around. Yet there's no need to be afraid. Because if you believe in the Lord then he will come to your aid. Fear God, don't fear the devil.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Satan is real, but it is not a powerful personality to challege God. It is the lower self in every man, and man can suppress it by living with his spiritual self.
There are times, evil is so triumphant that makes us feel it is somehting more powerful than man; in fact, it is because at that time many men have forgotten their spirituality. One of the great jobs of religions is to remind us about this improtant matter. The world becomes like heaven at the time when most people are truly religious - it means people don't bear the labels, but they live the spiritual life.

I believe Satan is real. He doesn't carry a pitchfork, nor does he have a tail...

You might be interested in reading the article listed above about Satan. It gives convincing evidence why we can be sure he is real.
