Have you ever considered that you may have attention deficit disorder? You are describing a few characteristics of the disorder. People with ADD are often painfully aware they are underachieving. They also lack direction, mainly because their direction is always changing. Also, ADD and depression often go hand in hand. Or, you could just suffer from strictly depression. I'd at least check out a website or 2 describing the characteristics of ADD and see if you have any others.

It is always cheaper to live in a smaller town. If you are not a professional worker, than a small town may be your ticket. Smaller towns thrive because of labourers. Is that your line of work?? Regardless, you need to search for jobs where the cost of living is cheaper. If it's cheaper to live, your quality of life will be higher.
First step. Search for jobs in a smaller centres. Call apartments if you have to in order to get an idea about costs. Secondly, spend most of your time narrowing your scope to 5-6 jobs you'd enjoy, pay well, and are located where living costs are lowest. Follow up on these jobs. Don't just send a resume and leave it. Find legitimate excuses to call so that your resume and name stand out. Call to ask them if they've received your resume, tell them you're looking forward to hearing from them and discussing the possibility of employment. Include a covering letter and hilight the skills that make you suitable for the job (or what you believe makes you suitable). Have someone proof read it who you believe has good writing skills.
Do not give up. Change is hard work. You just have to have a starting point and plug away without allowing yourself to get overwhelmed about all the "what if's". Make a plan and put it into action. If you don't get rich, at least you'll have a satisfying job, will have worked hard to get what you do have, and will still afterall, have a lovely daughter and wife.

I am going through a depression, myself. I am 29 and work for a school distict as a bus aide. Grant it, I get benefits, but, since they laid off a lot of people and cut back on hours, I'm now only working 4 hours and unemployment is a b-i-t-c-h!
So, I understand what you are talking about. Have you and your wife ever talked about moving up North or going further down South for a job opportunity? I am here in Jersey and it is tough, but, saying that, I do not want to move down to an unknown area (the South) and really feel out of place. Are you thinking of going back to school or, at least, just taking a computer course? Why not advertize in the grocery store on their bullitin board of some college or even, high school kid who knows something about computers. Maybe then, you get enough confidence to find an entry level job in that field. Because, if you can type decently on the computer, that is something there. But, you cannot think of killing yourself; what would happen to your wife and child? Then, you can really see what struggling is.
Let us see. You are in the Baltimore area. Any hospitals there?
You can go work in matainance in a hospital. Or, you can be one of these guys who help transport patients in their wheelchair to a vehicle? A crossing guard? A bus driver (if you have that CDL)?
How about working on some type of a loading dock or in shipments with lifting equipment?
There are some jobs out there for you. If you have a car, then, that may be better, if you do not mind the travel for the money you may be making to conpensate for it.
I know the feeling on wantint to end it all; we are not the only ones on this boat. Actully, a cruise liner. If I see you, I'll wave and say 'Hi', and let you know, you are not alone.
I wish you and your family luck and I hope your wife is as sucessful in finding something good as well.

Find what you are good at and do it. If you cannot find a job, then try to make one. (ie start your own business) If you believe that you under achieved then go back to school. It is never to late. However, you are worth more than your work. If you believe that a dream job will make you happy you are sadly mistaken. Why can't you be poor and happy? Happiness is not getting what you want. Happiness is being happy with what you got. Does not mean you should not try to improve yourself or situation but stop putting so much presure on yourself dude!

You know,....you should stop thinking so lowly of yourself. Take the attitude of the Japanese people as a good example. They believe that whatever job you can do...be it doctor or janitor...do your very best at it...make sure you do it with pride, so that your work will stand out.
Make sure you always have a good night sleep, because lack of sleep can cause depression. There are over-the counter products to help you fall asleep easier, but aim for the herbal ones...it has Valerian extract in it. After you get that under control,...then you have more zest for life. God bless.

I think that finances are enough to make anyone depressed. Although with your lack of motivation, it's definatly going to be hard to get you on your feet.
My suggestion is to go see some sort of Pastor, Minister, Father, or member of a Church because they are free and you do need counseling. In exchange, start going to Church on Sunday's, even if you aren't religious. Pick something non-denominational just because you never know when something good will strike you. See if anything changes and really open your heart and your mind to the possibility that good things will happen for you as long as you want them to and believe they can.
Best of luck for you and if you want motivation?? You have a child that needs you.

The job market in Baltimore sucks. Perhaps you should look farther out around Maryland. What about Aberdeen or Belair? Also, the cost of living is cheaper up that way. It's more expensive over by Annapolis, but I think there may be better jobs out that way. Good luck!

You don't need to be rich, if you don't need (want) much.
