......and must take everything that I want/need with me when I go, because it is to expensive to have anything shipped. OK, so what should I take with me and what should I leave and buy there? And also, any tips on how to cram (lol) the most in my suitcase would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm off to Uganda tommorow and am in the same situation. Iv'e done this before and personal irreplaceable things were the most important - photos on the wall are so much better than images on a computer.
Rome has probably everything you need, but I would never travel without my Swiss army knife (can't carry that on a plane now). I always take a bit of everything so I'm O.K till I get the lie of the land. I was teaching in Uzbekistan last year and they have no tobacco or cigarette papers there at all. Same for Uganda, so I'll be straight to duty free. Spare matching buttons for favourite clothes and a little sewing kit are handy. Some countries don't have blu tac or it's equivalent. I'm a weird size/shape so I make sure I have enough clothes to last me for a year. You will have a brilliant time, have lots of fun.
Make sure you weigh your case before you go to avoid excess, though I'm sure you have already thought of that.

I would suggest just packing in moderation (those personal things you absolutely don't want to live a year without). You can buy just as cool (or better) things over there than you would here in the States. Great shopping in Rome and Italy in general. However, if you wear shoes with a heel ....leave those at home. All those rough cobblestone streets in Rome will drive you crazy otherwise.

As for fitting the most in your suitcase, leave the toiletries out and just buy that stuff there. It takes up space and a lot of weight (you have a weight limit on your bag which is lower within places like the UK than what they let you in with!). Those plastic garment vacuum bags where the bag smashes down after all the air is taken out are awesome space savers too. Good luck.

first; find out how much weight you can bring back after a year, because you can bring more then other people. Then buy only stuff you don't get here,if small stick it in your shoes, like roll up panties and stick them in your shoes. Every little pocket fill out with some nick knacks. Lay the big stuff on top of your suitcase and if you must sit on it LOL . I been in your shoes so I know what you are talking about. Have a safe trip back.

All the other girls have some really great suggestions!
Make sure you bring converters for your hair dryer/hair curler etc. so you can plug in your things! You can put small things in your shoes when you pack. If you need to buy clothes over there, you can get clothes at any price over there!
I really hope you enjoy your trip!
