Maybe they don't expect you to solve their problems, they just need to vent to a good listener. We all need that once in awhile.
And all one can say is: I am sorry for what you're going through, what are you going to do about it? , or have you found a solution yet? Always encourage hope, and let them know that they have to the power to solve their own problems. Or seek professional help.

I had a friend pass away in July. He had a lot of problems and we talked a lot. I have problems in my own life and I got wrapped up in them and loss touch w/ him for awhile. Then one day I decide to catch up with him on myspace...... only to find that his roommate had made his page into a memorial which included a full obituary. My point is don't get so wrapped up in your own life that you can't take time to be apart of someone Else's. You can, however, explain that you have a lot on your plate right now and that you are trying to deal with things yourself. Let your friend know that you don't have the answers but that you are willing to listen. Just don't turn your back ......things may come back to haunt you if you do.

tell them the truth, i have a feeling that your the type of person to try to solve everyone's problems, but unfortunately, if you don't solve your own and take care of yourself first, you won't be able to help anyone else. Maybe, you could nicely explain to your friend that you would like to help her, but right now ,you have to focus on your problems for your own well being. Good luck!
