I've never had a weight problem, but getting older now and starting to put it on, plus I have high blood presssure. My doctor says I should walk each day, but I didn't ask how far or how long? I live in a small town, so the blocks are probably shorter than a city block. How many blocks is a good daily walk for health? Or should I clock it with my car.... in that case how many miles?

I used to walk about 2 miles or more everyday when I lived in NYC but now I'm in MD and I'm glad if I walk a quarter of a block now that I drive everywhere... I miss the exercise. The best thing to do is start with 1 mile and work your way up... to about 3-4 if your feeling okay. When your home and might be watching TV march in place or climb up and down a step board for 30-45 mins... best of luck.

You don't want to go nuts, especially if you are not used to exercise. Go for something PLEASANT around where you live. A park, the village. Start with something you feel comfortable with. Maybe half a mile would do it. Then, as the days go by, you can increase either the distance, or the number of outings, progressively getting to the point where you "forget" to take your car and just walk to wherever you have to go.

Since you have high blood pressure, have you thought about getting a walking treadmill? I think if you could afford it that it would be your best bet. Some of them will monitor your heart rate also, which with you having hypertension-feel this would benefit you more than walking outisde, in different weather extremes-and I don't have to mention how unsafe it is for a woman to be walking alone by herself nowadays?
Ask your doc if it would be ok for you to use treadmill as a source for your exercise regime.
Good luck!
