Either a Tape converter or a Video machine that converts tapes to DVDs

Technically, it involves connecting a VHS player to a computer that has both the hardware (usually, a video input card) and software (video recording / editing program) to capture the output, and DVD hardware (a DVD RW+/- drive) and software (DVD burning program).

You can then feed the input into the computer, have it record it, and then format this for DVD and burn the disc.

That's a very broad-brush description, but hopefully you get the idea.

Alternatively, there are lots of services (both online and brick & mortar) that will do this for you for a fee...the fee is sometimes very reasonable, and often completely outlandish, so do your research.

You don't have to use a PC for this, and if you're willing to invest a little into it, you don't have to use a service either. There are DVD recorders for your TV that work just like VCRs. If you connect the VCR's output to the input of the DVD recorder, and the output of the DVD recorder to the TV, you can record while you play on the VCR. It's really quite simple.

For the record, a decent DVD recorder only runs around $200-250, and once you have one you'll probably use it a lot.

Buy a DVD recorder and plug your VCR into the DVD recorder, that way, you can transfer those old home movies onto DVD where they can last forever! If you want to do it the old school way, you can plug your VCR into the computer and then record your home movies onto the computer with a TV tuner software and then take the recorded file, and then use a DVD burning software to transfer the movie file to DVD. You can even edit the video after importing with video editing software, another bonus!

Walgreens has a service where they will convert your VHS to DVD. I'm not sure how much it costs, but I had a family member that put her birthday party on DVD.
