with regular attendance at AlAnon meetings, quite possibly as long as he is not abusive in any way, physically, emotionally, financially, etc.

Island Fun, you are the one who needs to get a clue, NO ONE can make someone else an alcoholic.

Yes, it has a big impact for you and I'm sure that you've already been told that you can't help him until he's ready for help. But, you can tell him to get a job and move out, otherwise you are just enabling him to keep on doing that behavior. Also, you can call AA and ask where you can find an Al anon meeting that you can go to. They help the families of alcoholics to deal with feelings such as depression and you can meet several people who are going through the same thing and ask them what they have done about the situation. Good Luck.

If the mother knows that her SON has the problem, not her-then yes she can live with him not depressed.

If she is showing signs of depression, and her son is not currently attending AA. See if you can encourage her to attend the meetings, she will get a better understanding of the disease her son has and won't lay the blame upon herself, and it MAY just be the thing to get her to get him to DO something about his illness.

maybe you could look up an al anon meeting in your area, you can't control your son's alcoholism. also another thing you might want to think about is the fact that maybe you are enabling him. My parents and grandparents have been enabling my brother for years and right now he is sitting in prison. Let him learn to care for himself regardless of the consequences he has to take . tough love. Good luck and i will keep you in my prayers

Difficult, but not impossible. You need support from Al Anon. I've seen a lot of family members of alcoholics turn their lives around to be stronger and happier by not blaming themselves or letting themselves be taken advantage of through Al Anon.

No, any responsible parent would be devastated by this. He/she should be in treatment for their problem. It kills me to see parents sit and do nothing while their own child kills themself, mind boggling to me. She may be an enabler, a closet drunk herself, take a close look into this and if it;s true commit them both to a rehab program they cannot quite. I did this for my brother years ago when he was in his early 20's. I came home from the Marines on leave and found him in terrible condition. My mom and several others were very upset with me for doing that but you know what, I did the right thing for him, and he is alive today and doing very well. He thanks me every time he see's me too! Sometimes doing what's right isn't popular!!!

No!

Throw him out and let him learn a lesson for himself or he'll take advantage of the mother and take her down with him. Harsh but, It's called Tough Love!

Please find an ALANON meeting near you. They will help you learn you do not have any control over your son. I am on medication for depression because of my pot addicted son. But ALANON really helps.
