You may have to check zoning in your area. You need about an acre to have enough space. We had one on our sailboat for a while, and it did a good job, but we switched to solar panels because of the noise.

These links should help. Best of luck with it.

The small wind turbine industry recommends property sizes of one-half acre or more for turbines up to approximately 3 kW and one acre or more for a larger turbine. Small wind turbines can be heard above background noise if you are within a few hundred feet, and some neighbors may object to the way they look. You will reduce the chance that a neighbor will object to your installing a small wind turbine if you have a buffer area of land between your turbine and your neighbors.

You will also need to be aware of zoning and permitting issues in your area. Building permits are usually obtained by the planning office for the city or county with jurisdiction over your property. Some cities and counties have restrictions on the height of tower that can be installed without a variance. The permitting process can sometimes have a large impact on the overall cost of the project.

there are now several wind generators that can be attached to your roof. about a metre diameter.

but it depends how much power you want.
It would run your pc, lighting & hi-fi, but not your air-con, cooking, tungsten spotlights etc.

Some electric suppliers will allow conection to the grid, so your home generator effectivly turns your meter backwards if you generate more than you need at any time. This saves hassle of storage batteries etc.

The problem with fixing to house or in a built up area is the turbulent air flow. Wind turbines really like somooth constant wind for optimum performance. But as an indicator that you are trying to reduce your ecological footprint a home turbine or solar pannels are a good statement (note: this can cause animosity with people who don't like to be reminded that our current lifestlye is unsustainable. It's a bit like being a re-formed drug addict)

technically, you could have windmill generate electricity that as big as your desk, but to get enough power to power up your house. I would guess off the top of my head you would need at least a 500 square feet, the main challenge is height and stability, if you could anchor it somehow you wouldn't need to have that much square footage.

who am i kidding this is basically just a guess

In concept if there grow to be a ability shrink or failure, then our electricity can no longer get returned into the grid. besides the shown fact that, if there have been engineers attempting to repair the elctricity furnish domestically there's a danger that our ability could leak to the place they're working and electrocute them. I install wind machines, small ones. the machine should be 30 feet above the tops of trees or buildings and the machine should have clearance around the base equal to the height of the tower.
