yes-you are talking 4 times more color-4 times greater definition-blu-ray also incorperates dolby 5.1 (6.1 in some cases)-blu-ray (or high def) walks all over standard def-but be prepared to pay out for the privelidge-you would need a hd ready television to take advantage of the pictures

Right now, Blu Ray (on the currently available player) is marginally better than standard DVD. The new HD-DVD (the competing format), however, is greatly superior to standard DVD, in the same way that true HDTV broadcast is better than standard definition digital broadcast. (Actually, HD-DVD is better than broadcast HDTV.) The problem with Blu Ray is in the encoding of the discs, as they have run into problems making two-layer discs. No doubt these problems will eventually be overcome, and both Blu Ray and HD-DVD will offer outstanding pictures. I have seen HD-DVD on a good TV set, and it is without quesion the highest quality picture I've ever seen. I think it is too early to get into high definition DVD because of the competing formats: whichever one you choose, some movie you want will be available only in the other format. Eventually, there will be players that will handle both formats, and as far as I'm concerned, that is the way to go.
