"Believe it or not my husband went into our daughers room (she believed there was a green-eyed, snotty-nosed monster in her closet) and took his make believe shotgun and opened up the door and yelled at it and shot it. She totally believed that the monster was now dead and no more problems with nighttime fears. "
Did you say he shot it? Like, actually pull the trigger and blast the closet to smithereens? Because, now, I'm scared of him!!!
Just kidding. If that's what it took to make my daughter comfortable, I'd wield a AK myself.

You can only overcome one belief with a bigger one.
If she believes there is a monster/s in the closet, then tell her you will buy a "magic pendant" and every night you will place that pendant in the closet handle. That will prevent any monsters to step inside her room because monsters are scare of pendants...
Or if you are not that creative then block that door with a chair in a way that cannot be opened. The only way this will go away is if you take her seriously enough to believe something BIG needs to be done to prevent monsters from getting out of the closet

you fill a bottle up with water , and put a monster spray tag on it ,,, Spray it around in her room , let her spray it , and tel;l her that the spray has a smell to it that monsters don't like , and people can't smell . I did this when my daughter was little , needed many a sleepless nights . Just keep the bottle out of sight and fill it up when she's not looking . Those young ones are smart and catch on quick

This helped me.....Give her a spray bottle full of "Monster Spray Killer". Before putting her to bed give the room, closet and under the bed a good spray and LEAVE the spray by her bed...so she can spray if she wakes up in the middle of the night. May be a bit damp in the AM, but it's worth it if it gets her to sleep thru the night.

If she tells you that she's scared take yourself and her into the closet and wait silently for the "monster". When nothing happens tell her there is no monster and that thier pretend or make-believe. Or you can sprinkle salt or a liquid telling her that it gets rid of all bad things including monsters. If that doesn't work lay with her in her bed until she falls asleep.

My sister did three things. Buy her a stuffed animal to protect her.
Show her the closet at night.
Fill a spay bottle with some water and a little calming room freshener or essential oil (such as lavender) and tell her its monster repellent. Spray the room with it at night. She will feel safer and the lavender scent will help her calm down.

1. find out what she likes ... ex. butterflies
2. put some pictures of "butterflies" around her room
3. tell her there is nothing in the room but butterflies
4. come into her room with her everyday( for about month)
5. sit with her( read a story) and show her that their is nothin in the closet.
6. say good night , maybe leave the door open(or have a night light in her room)
7. after a while she will get it and , she will dream of happy things, and acually sleep.
good luck

If she can invent a monster, then you can invent something that keeps the monsters away. My husband solved this by giving our daughter a short piece of copper tube and told her it was a special thing that would keep the monster away. She kept it by her bed. It also gives the child a feeling of being in control.
