given that there are thousands upon thousands upon millions of birds, why do you never see any of them on the ground dead? where do they all go? You never see them dropping out of the sky! Is there some kind of bird graveyard that they all fly to, to die?

unless their life expectancy is about 200 years or something, i think none of those answers explains the question, think about it!

i live and walk in the country every day, never see a dead bird from one month to the next, no dead birds in the towns or villages either, road cleaners twice a year if your lucky - could it be that when the time comes, birds migrate out towards the oceans and quite literally fall out of the sky, eaten by the fish - if this is even a bit right, nature is much better organised at cleaning up than we are!

It's called biodegradation, and it's something we human beings know nothing about. That's why we've loused up the planet.

You do actually see them, dead on the ground, but since they are camoflaged by nature anyway, they can be hard to spot, most of the time a dead bird wont be laying around for very long, as soon as the foxes and other predators come out they snap them up, in cities, a lot of birds die every year due to flying into buildings, most of these are removed by the cleansing guys around dawn, before anyone gets going!

You've asked a great question. If birds were any other animal, the earth would be littered with bigger piles of their carcasses. This is why:

Most bird bones are hollow, so they break apart very easily and take much less time to biodegrade. By the time that the skin of the bird has been picked apart, the bones are likely more like gravel. Some mammals can chew them up like we chew up a salmon bone.

I have seen MANY dead birds on the ground in different places and situations over the course of my lifetime: dead crows, jays, pigeons, robins, turkies, grouse, starlings, chickadees.... I think that you just have to spend a lot of time outdoors and really look for them to notice them. Their bodies DO get eaten up rather quickly by scavengers and/or decomposed by scavanging insects- bird bodies are surprisingly small and don't take long for beetles to devour.

The only birds that die, are the ones that you see, killed by cats, cars ,twats with guns etc.. All the birds that you see have been here FOR EVER! Prove me wrong.

They seem to come to my garden so my cats can help them on their way, as do mice.
