I was just wondering because I have a female (spayed) black cat who is currently two years old. every other black cat I've known has been a male. I never heard of rare female black ones before. I'm just curious so if you have any info please answer. thanks!

There are definite genetic reasons why tortoiseshell or calico cats have their color patterns and are almost 100% female. The pattern is on the X chromsome. The incidence of orange cats is also genetically determined -- 75% chance of being male, 25% chance of being female. That's a chance, just like any mammal has a 50% chance of being male and a 50% chance of being female.

I have never heard that black cats follow any sex related reason for their coloring.

At one time I did want to buy a book on cat genetics and it was something close to $300.

There are probably just as many female black cats as male.

Unlike Calico cats and Red tabbies, there is no genetic basis that black cats should be male OR female.

It's strictly coincidence that you happened to have this experience.
