My husband is Army and we might get sent there. I keep hearing how horrible it is to be stationed there. Is there anyone who has liked it there? What's it like?

The Good Old North Country. It is not as bad as all of the horror stories you'll hear. I spent 4 years there, and I'll do my best to give you some scoop:

Con's (Start with the bad): 1) Very long winters (often from mid-Sep through May ypu will have snow....a lot of snow) 2) Watertown, NY is a pretty small town, and the economy shows it. 3) Fort Drum utilizes the 801 housing system, meaning that you may have government quarters 40 miles from post. That stinks in the winter. 3) Did I mention very long, cold winters? 4) Aggressive deployment schedule. The addition of the 4th Brigade at Ft. Polk didnt help alleviate the deployments much. But seeing as how the 10th Mtn. Div. is the best combat division in the Army, you cant blame the leadership for deploying so much.

Pro's: 1) The newest Army installation, and all of the post assets show it. 2) A beautiful area, gentle rolling hills and trees everywhere. The post itself is huge, and has wildlife galore. 3) An outdoorsman dream. Hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing galore. Plus you are only 30 minutes from a Great Lake and the St. Lawrence Seaway. 4) 10th Mtn. Div. is the best trained combat division in the Army with a huge fiscal budget, so soldiers are never short on gear.

The government housing situation bothers a lot of people, because it is inconvenient to live 40 miles from post, but once people try most end up liking it. I personally lived in Clayton, NY, and I could see the St. Lawrence River from my front door. It was so nice. I really miss it. (Not enough to leave Colorado though).

It is just like any other Army assignment, it is all in what you make of it.

I hope this helps a little.

Yes, I was there. My husband was stationed there. I liked it there personally. The housing was nice and no waiting list (though they said it was a year wait). The falls are beautiful. The winters are cold but not bitter cold and there is a TON of snow. If you don't know how to ski you should try going to Dry Hill and take lessons in downhill skiing. It's a baby hill and a good place to learn and a lot of fun. The beach on Lake Ontario is only 30 min away and Canada is only 30 miles north up I-80. Syracuse is a big shopping area and only an hour south on I-80. NY is a very historic state. There is a ton of stuff to do and sights to see. The base has two sides to it. We called it old base and new base. I was there when they were opening the new side of base and lived in the housing when it was brand new in the early 90's. One thing I will warn you against. DO NOT bank with Key Bank on base!!! They will charge you for everything and are not helpful when you make an error in your banking.

My son, daughter in law, & their 2 beautiful daughters are there now. They love it. Summer is great - not too hot & lots of pretty areas around. They like to camp & we have gotten some beautiful pictures. Winter has a ton of snow but they keep roads clean. The Officer housing is great - roomy with fenced in back yard. They have made lots of friends.
