I think you would love a miniature Chihuahua or a miniature or tea cup poodle. I have miniature poodles and they are very quiet and cute. they don't shed and they weigh 10 to 15 pounds. My friend Jimmie just got a miniature Chihuahua and she is the cutest thing I have ever seen. She is playful, sweet, very easy to train, she doesn't shed at all, maintenance is minimal, she is very quite, extremely smart, and she weighs about a pound and the vet said she won't get more than an ounce or two bigger than that. they are great dogs you should really check them out. but don't forget to look at all of the potential health problems. otherwise it could get really expensive. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for.

The first thing that comes to my mind is a Bedlington Terrier. They seem to meet all of your requirements. You can go to your local library and get one of Chris Walkowicz's books...either The Perfect Match: A Dog Buyer's Companion, or Choosing a Dog for Dummies. Both are excellent references that tell the quirks of many popular breeds.
The Chinese Crested Hairless dogs are cute and don't shed, but they are very difficult to housebreak!!

Get a mini dauchshund (hot dog) short haired. They don't shed, are very quiet, loyal but stubborn. Also territorial if you dont' have kids and plan to have them in the future. Once they are your "baby" they dont' like to share. They have a lifespan of 15 years so plan to have one for a long time.

All dogs shed, but in different ways. Check out the ACK online: http://www.akc.org/ They have lots of breed info, breeders and rescues. You will be able to find something that will suit your lifestyle, and places to look for one. Just be sure to be informed about the breed before you decide on one - just because it is cute, doesn't make it the right breed for you ;)

I would think a chichaua( dont know how to spell it but if you dont get it its a taco bell dog), miniature doberman pincher, pug, Dotson, usually short hair dogs as long as they are not a hound wont shed very much at all and alot of long hair dogs dont shed much either.
