Why are so many people down and talking about how horrible things are when we're living at the best moment in time to be human!? Why all the pessimism?

There have always been wars, droughts, floods, etc., and probably will be for the forseeable future. I wager anyone reading this has plenty to eat, plenty of liesure time, access to medical care that allows them to live mostly without concern of dying from infections due to lack of antibiotics. How many here never had polio, or any of the other pre-vaccine childhood diseases that used to impact almost all families? We have boundless knowledge and easy access to it. The old superstitions are crumbling before our eyes. Maybe people need to quit watching the news.

Because society conditions us to believe that we're never happy until we own every thing. It's not OUR fault, the media tells us to think that way, and what right minded person questions what Fox News says?!

Just because we're living in better times, doesn't mean they're good. Besides - what is good is relative, I don't think the people in Kenya who have been living through 4 years of drought think that these times are especially good, and how do you know some times in pre history weren't better than now, as there is no recorded evidence what those times were like.

I agree that in so many ways these are the best of times. We have the best medicine, transportation, technology, not to mention just good old electric power for ease and comfort. What people are complaining about is terrorism, porn, child predators, drugs, and drop in spirituality and community. The family is too distracted to be a family. I see people all the time at the grocery store on their phone with their little baby sitting in the cart right in front of them. I wonder why don't they use this high quality time to interact with their child. They are on the phone in their cars ignoring their kids also. I just don't see people actually engaging in the very activities they are engaged in. One of the best times to talk with kids is in the car when you have a captive audience! Too many activities and not enough down time together. I do believe we are living in one of the most fascinating times in history. We should be doing it together.

We are truly a bunch of spoiled brats. Our parents had very little compared to us and generations before that had real hardship. Most Americans have little or no knowledge or hardship that is due to outside forces. When we can't get what we want when we want, we call that hardship. I think this is a result of being told that we are important when we were young and that caused us to develop a sense of entitlement that goes to no other species.

People killing people all over the world, war erupting throughout the middle east, murder in the name of religion, thousands starving in places like Africa, children dying of disease and malnutrition in third world countries, the best of times? I think not.

Have to agree with you. Self-hatred is the current biggest fad. I'm getting really sick of it. It's pointless and offensive. In the end, that's all it is, a fad.

I like witnessing war after war. Really, its refreshing to watch the religious battle it out to the death.
