after reviewing the results of a sonogram and ultrasound test, could a doctor mistakenly believe a person has a large fibroid tumor when really their colon/intestines is impacted? from constipation?

There is no way a radiologist will confuse a fibroid within the uterus with a problem in the colon. In fact, you are not able to see the intestinal tract with ultrasound. Air in the colon (and yes, everyone has air there!) will interfere with an ultrasound. Ultrasound cannot see through air, and air causes a black streaking which does not allow you to see anything. This is one of the reasons you must fill your bladder before a pelvic ultrasound. It pushes the intestines up and away from the uterus and ovaries, so they can be seen.

I doubt it. The radioligst reads thousands of ultrasounds every month and the likelihood of this happening would be very rare. They see things and decipher everything from pennies in the transverse colon to overlying bowel gas shadowing the pancreas. If you have questions and are suspicious. have the test repeated or ask the doctor to explain it.
