I'm interested in learning the main stories and becoming familiar wih the ideas. What's a good "encyclopedia" of mythology?

DO NOT read the Iliad it's rubbish! The Odyssey is a really exciting adventure and will give you some idea of the legends of the time if you are new to the subject. For basic information I would recommend Brewers Dictionary of Phrase and Fable.

I don't know where you might go next but I hope this is helpful if you are just starting on the subject. Hope you get some more detailed answers than this, good luck!
