Consumer Reports Digital Camera QUICK PICKS

Best values in compact models:
Canon PowerShot A510 $170, CR Best Buy
Sony Cybershot DSCS60 $200, CR Best Buy
Panasonic Lumix DMCLZ1 $210
Canon PowerShot A520 $175, CR Best Buy
Olympus Camedia C-5500 $250

All have excellent or very good print quality and good battery life. The Canon PowerShot A510 has 3-megapixel resolution; the A520 has 4-megapixel. Both have manual controls, for added flexibility in shooting, and a 4x zoom. The Sony has 4-megapixel resolution and a short next-shot delay. The 4-megapixel Panasonic has a 6x zoom and an image stabilizer. The 5-megapixel Olympus has a 5x zoom and an image stabilizer.

For a camera that fits in a purse or pocket:

Sony Cybershot DSC-L1 $240
Canon PowerShot SD300 $260
Kodak EasyShare V550 $320
Casio Exilim Zoom EX-Z750 $380

All are small and light, with excellent print quality, 3x zoom, and good battery life. The Sony is low-priced for a subcompact, but its flash range is just 7 feet and it lacks a viewfinder. The Canon has a short next-shot delay. The Kodak has an image stabilizer. Only the Casio has manual controls. It's slimmer than other subcompacts, has an image stabilizer, and shoots better video than most subcompacts.

You need to check out HP's (Hewlett Packard) line of digital cameras. Good prices and great quality. Don't be sucked in by all of the big name brands. Check around and see what works best for you.

Cheap it a relative term.

If you want a good camera at a reasonable price, I would look at the Casio Exilim line of digital camera:

They are sold at Radio Shack at http://www.radioshack.com Some of them actually take high-quality videos! I own the S500, and I love it! It's AWEsome!
