I had non alcoholic wine the other night then had an anxiety attack.I am taking antabuse. What does it feel like when you drink on antabuse? Do you feel anxious? I know about the physical symptoms but I didn't know it could do what happened to me the other night. Has anyone known of similair instances? My drinks counsellor is certain the wine caused it because of the chemicals in it

When purchasing alcohol free drinks - you have to be more than 100% sure that it *really* is *totally* free of alcohol. As a previous answer said, there could still be a trace. This happens when drinks which had alcohol in are treated to remove the alcohol. Drinks which start off as non alcoholic (Eg. Apple juice) are safer becuase the manufacturing process ensures that they do not turn alcoholic - in this case in to cider.

It would be a lot harder to turn cider back into apple juice.

Your drinks counsellor will most likely be wanting to steer you away from any drink which is associated with an alcoholic drink. It's extremely dangerous to drink a 'de-alcoholized' drink when you're trying to avoid the 'real stuff'.

Re. Screwing up on Antabuse........ this has happened to others. They are dead now. Antabuse works by disabling a liver enzyme - ADH (Alcohol DyHydrogenese) - which acts as a metabolic agent in breaking alcohol down. The absence of this agent has the affect of turning alcohol into formaldehyde - which is used for preserving - shall we say 'pickling' - specimens. (Also it's what ants use as poison). Essentially, a person who drinks alcohol while on Antabuse will give their brain a high (or very high) dose of formaldehyde. At best, this causes nausea and a shocking headache. The more alcohol consumed, the more 'poison' in the brain.

Anxiety is not a by-product of alcohol/antabuse - but as you are aware of the dangers of the two combined, it's only natural that you become anxious.

Antabuse means stay off ALL alcohol, and if you want to avoid the urge to appraoch 'your old favourites' stay of anything that mimicks them.
