Okay, Mapquest says you can drive from Scranton to the town I'm visiting near NYC in three hours, going thru north Jersey. If I leave about noon, is that a realistic estimate, or is there likely to be bad traffic anywhere along that route this week on a weekday? Thanks.

I think its possible, and you could possibly make better time than that (depending on exactly where near NYC you are going). You might want to check for any traffic alerts or construction.
I probably wouldn't try it on a Friday, though.
While driving in New Jersey you can get decent traffic reports at 101.5fm - - it is sometimes hard to get in Northeast Jersey, but Northwest Jersey I can usually still get them. Traffic reports are every 15mins.
Good Luck!!

If you leave at noon, it's pretty realistic UNLESS you're trying to come into Manhattan. Then, it can vary widely. Might want to try Yahoo Maps - I've found a lot of errors using Mapquest.

Personally, I prefer 84

Figure three to four hours drive time. You might do less, but probably not. (Many people in NJ can't seem to drive and there's ALWAYS accidents. LOL!!)
