I suggest your library where there are books for various abilities for starters. -- patterns are very expensive-- but if you check garage sales and thrift shops you might get what you want.
HOWEVER-- there are two things you need if you buy a used pattern-- there should be a directions sheet ( or two)-- and you need to use that directions sheet to make sure you have ALL the pieces that are needed for that garmet or sofa/chair/-- you get the idea. The pieces are usually labeled A-B and so on-- some are labeled FRONT and so forth. Each piece is shown in the directions-- take a sewing friend for your first foray into patterns.
Good luck

This site provides some help laying out a sewer. http://www.fionaadoresheroes.com/pages/gaming/sewer.htm
Actually, consulting a contractor would be the best bet. For one thing, you need the location of any cables buried in your yard.
Edit: What the heck? I feel like I wandered into the wrong room here (I'd have never associated a sewer with sewing). I guess it's really true that men are from Mars and women are from Venus.

All pattern companies usually have their patterns coded for beginner, experienced, and advanced sewers either with a color or text. Usually any pattern that takes 2 hours or less is also good for beginners.

Micheals is an excellent place to start...if there is one in your town, otherwise try to find a big arts and crafts store.
