my home phone stopped working what could it be?

Question

I paid the bill but the phone isn't working.it is only 6 months old and when you try to call someone instead of a tone you hear a very loud noise and when I tried to call my phone with my mobile you can hear the ringing tone in my mobile but you can't hear the phone itself ring.what is the problem?
the phone is a BT Freestyle7250 there is a base with the phone which is also handsfree if needed.

Try plugging in a different phone (borrow one from a friend or neighbour). The tone you hear when calling from your ,mobile is an exchange generated one nothing to do with your phone ringing. Some faulty line conditions can fool the exchange into thinking that the line is ok, so it sends you the tone and thinks it is also ringing your house phone. I would suggest you report it and get the line tested..

Before you ring BT or bin your phone, Borrow another phone (that you know works) plug it in,(You must plug it in to the main BT socket,not a extension just in case you have a faulty extension)
if your line now works, your phone´s faulty if it still doesn't work, your line must have a fault so once you have eliminated all other possibilities you can call BT out to fix it (if the fault is on your side of the main BT socket they will charge you)

Plug in another phone..if it works then it's your other phone that's broken.
Alternatively take your phone to a friend's house & plug it into a their socket & see if it works.

have you checked that the ringer button is in the on possition, if it is not then you will not hear it ring. but you will from ya mobile. i'm always doing that and wonder why no one has called. have a check
