I read somewhere that only about 15%-25% of the money people give in church actually goes to help the unfortunate. Most of it goes to expand the church or pay for material, unecessary items that only the church members benefit from. Why do people condone this? That isn't the purpose of Christianity is it? To help only oneself?

Hi I'm a UK Christian in a newfrontiers church, and our church does not DEMAND a tithe from it's members, but I can tell you that holding back what God has asked of us (in the Bible, try Malachi) prevents us from having His blessings. We are taught God's heart on the subject because our elders are fantastic people who give their tithe and know the blessings it brings. We have an evening every now and then to tell us (with charts) where the tithe money goes. The treasurer is in my house group and is one of the most down to earth people I have ever met in my life! Maintaining historic buildings, by the way, is not top of god's priorities. We rent the town hall at the moment anyway but our money goes on the poor and on outreach work mainly

As long as taxpayer funds are not used, I don't really care where the money goes. But I think our local churches spend a fair amount of their income on good causes. There are also maintenance costs, heating and air conditioning bills, cleaning bills, insurance, paying for the church-owned vehicles, etc. I don't think the pastors are spending it all in Las Vegas casinos.

The money goes to Missionary work, various other charities, we donate to a local food pantry for lower income families. A portion goes to the church and anything that may need repaired or supplies needed for the church.

in UK the churches are supported and OWNED by the Nation, the State; the Church is called the Church of England for a reason, it BELONGS to ENGLAND, it is supported and maintinaed by the national taxes. In the USA Churches and synogoues and mousticqs are owned by the religion it represents. therefore the moneys people donate DO go to support that structure and the people in it who work there; all their books are open per freedom of information acts, many Federal acts.

And the US has 1000's of historic churches and buildings,

And the idea of tithe and giving is in the bible, not an american Idea. Of course the government helping in the control to make one denomination more acceptable helps keep more people in that church.

10% of our money goes towards the Church. Things like rebuilding, mission trips, and so on. Plus, Churches in England have more tourists because your churches are older.

together as they might desire to be respected, the Bible is obvious that the place 2 or greater are accumulated, the Lord may be discovered. additionally, the Bible states that the 'very rocks of creation might cry out' His glory . . . So are homes themselves Holy? No . . .
