My friend has just told me she found a "little blue 'star'" that popped up on her taskbar, and the caption reads to click to download "winxp endsoct10". I just checked with Microsoft.com and can't find the item in a search query. I suspect it's a virus. Where can I find more info on this "winxp endsoct10" ?

And my friend can't find the little bugger in her ADD/REMOVE programs list. So how does she be rid of this potential virus bug?

Are you sure you have the right file name? A search didn't bring up anything about that. As a true computer geek I never heard of that file before. I can only think the file name is spelled wrong or one of the applications your friend has loaded is doing an autoupdate of itelf.

I checked on symantec'ssite and found nothing. Microsoft doesn't use a blue star for downloads not sure what this could be..if she didn't download it she should be okay....but be safe have them update their anti-virus and scan again..plus scan with a good spyware as well.

best of luck to them.

The little blue star appears when MS has detected a pirated XP OS.

are you sure this isn't a reminder of sorts and the message ends on october 10th? XP probably will not function after 10/10 due to no registration.

It sounds like it's some kind of malware. Have your friend download a program like adaware or spybot: search and destroy. That should get rid of it.
