Atheists, what do you say to people who tell you that you're going to go to hell?

EXACTLY my point Andie....do we really think we are scaring an atheist in to being a christian by telling them they are going to hell when they don't even believe in it? hmmm....

And be sure to leave the cookies out for Santa on Christmas Eve, and don't worry about putting Easter eggs out for the kids on Easter, for just as Christ rose from the dead, the Easter Bunny will come hoppity hop hopping along and deliver those eggs to make them happy.

I would say that the answer to this would be based on the religon of the asker.

Going to hell - i beleive that the bible states "do not judge - lest ye be judged"...Does this mean the the asker of the question would then be condemed to hell? not if you are catholic - just confess & do your hail mary's & your cool. Right?

In some instances - i have heard the following answer - "Good - i would much rather play an accordian than a damn harp."

I think that the asker of the question is the subject of blind faith & should really look into the religon that they state they subscribe to - this may produce an affect in them that may cause them to readjust their thinking.

I tell them to keep their fairy tales to themselves and that I can't go somewhere that doesn't exist. Hell and Satan are just the ordained boogie-man from our childhood.

We really need to rise above our superstitions and start looking at reality for what is actually there. So far empirical thought (i.e. science) has been the best method we have available to do this.

I tend not to hang out with people who would hand out such threats. And if I by accident happen to be in someone's presence when they disclose that opinion, I'm likely to find a way to escape their company as soon as possible. And finally, if their statement seems to warrant some response, I'm likely to say, "My mind doesn't feel good thinking such things about people. I'm sorry you have to live in a world where that kind of judgment pervades your thinking."

Actually if I'm in a pissy mood I'll ask them if it's cool if I lock them and some people they care about in my basement and torture them for as long as I can keep them alive, and, you know, really get creative with it. I'm mean it's cool with them, right? Would be kind of hypocritical not to let me do it too.
