Throw some logs in and fire it up.

This only works during the day.

Open one door or window to the outside.

Close & block all light from all other doors/windows into the room & turn off the lights.

Open up the fireplace & the bird should eventually fly out the open door/window. If it starts to fly around the room, just make noise & wave your hands so it will direct to the open window.

Don't hit the bird with a broom-- you could injure it.

Good Luck.

I don't know much about bird-proofing fireplaces, but I had some ideas to coax it out. If the bird comes down far enough that you can see it's in there, you could try to coax it down further with a dish of corn and black oil sunflower seeds, and a little water. Once it lets down its guard enough, catch it under an open cardboard box and set it free.

If it's too far up, making bird calls up the chimney, with a recording or a bird whistle, may convince it to scram, too. Some libraries have recordings of birds of prey that should do the trick.

Okay, the first thing you need to do is get the bird out of your house!!!! Then you need to check if there is a nest in your chimney. If there is take it out. Then go to Dixie line ( or any hard ware store) and get chicken wire. Then put the chicken wire over the top of the chimney.

Put a screen on the chimney. It will also reduce fire hazard by limiting embers from going out the chimney when you use the fireplace.

??? Scare it our with pots and pans or a mop and shove it up there as high as possible and bang it on the sides. then put wire on top so the bird can't get in a again.
