The universe was created by God and is separate from Him. New Agers use the term "universe" mainly because they don't want to speak of God.

You didn't confine your question to adherents of any particular belief system, so I opted to voice my opinion.
I DON'T believe that the universe is God.
The word "universe" is broken down as follows:
uni - indicating one only, a reference to a single item.
verse - a spoken sentence.
The universe is called the universe because it originated as a result of a single spoken sentence by God.
The universe is not God, God created the universe.

I believe that it is innate in humans to want to worship something and the term God is a a comfortable fit for worship. Your friend probably wouldn't know what to do with universe....How do we interact with it? Talk to it? Look at it? Bow down to it?

All religions pronounce the name of God in their particular langauge. As a rule it is better for a man to name God in his native tongue rather than in one that is foreign to him. Me I believe all gods and godess are the same I refer to mine as the Universal Mind

Why complicate the uncomplicated. All this because you do not understand God. But want to criticize those who do.

Because people are afraid to step out of the bounds of traditions and the dogmas of the things they have been "taught" are "right".
I like your philosophy here, and the fact that you expressed it in such an amicable manner.
