I love to hike. My boyfriend can hike up trails, but going downhill for very long makes his knees ache and swell. He thinks he damaged cartiallage from skiing moguls a lot when he was in his twenties.
Is there any thing that can be done so he can hike with me? Exercises? Stretching? Would surgery make it possble for him to hike?

I am in my late 30s and also do a lot of hiking and sometimes get some pain/weakness in my right knee. I find that the following things help:

Exercise and muscle building - I definitely have fewer problems when I am in good shape compared to when I have not exercised in a while. Going to a gym and doing leg exercises (in addition to walking/hiking helps).

Knee Brace - I just have a simple Ace one from a drugstore - one with a metal band down the sides for extra support and firmness.

Trekking poles - If he especially has problems going downhill than getting a good pair of trekking poles (look like ski poles) could help a LOT. They take a lot of strain off the knees on both up and downhill. I now use them all the time when backpacking (knee hurting or not).

Of course, if the pain and swelling is frequent and severe, than a visit to the doctor to have them checked out is never a bad idea (and probably a very good thing to do before undertaking any really big hikes and potentially doing more damage).

For surgery to help, there would need to be something damaged that could be repaired. If its cartilage then there is definate help. I've had that surgery.

He could also see a physical therapist to help strengthen the muscles around the knee.

You can take any natural supplement and it will help you stay healthy. But there is a natural juice in particular that my family and I have been taking. It's made from the mangosteen fruit, from southeast Asia and the juice tastes great. Check out my website and if you're interested, email me and I can call you or email you with more details.

I know two nurses at the hospital where I work who drink monavie juice for their knee problems and have gotten significant relief from the pain.
