Eph.6:17... the sword of the spirit, God's word.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and exerts power and is sharper than any two-edged sword and pierces even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and their marrow, and is able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart.
In Revelation Jesus sword is literal, in the sense of warfare, and is used to eliminate his enemies on earth.
Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth there protrudes a sharp long sword, that he may strike the nations with it, and he will shepherd them with a rod of iron.

There is a doctrine in some scholarly circles that requires that an exponent must always have the same symbolic interpretation.
It's called exponential constancy. I think it's bunk.
The symbolism in the historical books is clearly different than the prophetic books, and the New Testament is different again.
It's one of those theories that doesn't hold water.
A sword could symbolize weapons in particular, warfare in general, the law of God, a means of death or death itself etc.
Context will dictate.

Traditionally swords are associated with the element of air; in comparing it to a person, it can signify intellect (which is where phrases like "cutting wit" and referring to someone as "sharp" come from).

You'll need to be more specific; but swords are often phallic symbols (check out Toshiro Mifune in the movie "Seven Samurai")....
