It's not a stupid question at all.
Much of this depends on the freshness of the corn, but it should be between 12 and 15 minutes. I agree with adding sugar rather than salt to the boiling water.
Better alternatives are steaming, which allows the corn to retain more flavor but the microwave method wrapped in plastic wrap is good too.
If you have a grill, you may want to try cooking it on the grill in the husks. Peel back the husks and remove the silk, and wrap them back up. Soak them in a salt water solution for some 30 minutes. On the grill it takes a bit longer. Turn it frequently and keep off the direct heat, unless you like burning it, probably about 20-25 minutes.

It doesn't take long to boil corn....20 mins will make it come out hard and tough...not good. If you want to boil it, place the ears of corn in a pot of water. Bring the water to a boil and it's DONE. That simple.

You're better off wrapping the ears of corn in aluminum foil and sticking them in the oven or grill for 18-20 mins at 350 Degrees F. It's a waste of foil but it'll be the best ear of corn you've ever eaten.

I don't boil them any more. It's much easier to do it in the microwave. Rinse four ears of corn so that they are a little damp and put them in a covered glass dish. Microwave on high for five minutes, turn the dish around, and microwave on high for another five minutes. Then let it stand for a while. Great corn! If you do more, add about two minutes more time per ear.

The amount of time to let your corn boil ranges from 1-10 minutes depending on how soft you want your corn. Also don't forget to add a tablespoon of sugar and tsp of salt

Till its heated through...maybe 5 or 6 minutes. Going overboard you will not be able to handle it to eat it. Corn you can actually eat without cooking at all so it really is just a matter of how hot you want it.

For one or two ears boil for about ten minutes but don't over cook or it will toughen up and lose a lot of sweetness.
