i made apple juice a daily part of my child's diet. He had the same problem. I started off with two 8 oz. servings a day. Then after he began going easier ( in a couple days) I reduced it to one 8 oz serving. Now he is pretty regular and time and consistancy wise and we don't have to worry about laxatives.

Since you have consulted your dr on this already, I'm not sure if my suggestion will help or not. My son goes through this occasionally and what has helped him the most is drinking at least one cup of the following mixture daily:
1/2 the cup of Apple Prune Juice from Gerber
1/2 the cup of Fruit Punch
with a teaspoon of Mineral Oil
This seems to help keep everything from hardening on him. He still doesn't go on a regular basis (we also just started potty training in June....makes having a bowel movement even more difficult), but this helps him from having the constipation and being in pain.
Good luck!

Hiya i have had this problem with both of my children from birth upto being about 2, i cut out all dairy products as i found the were lactose intolerant. dont know if it will help but try looking at the diet and see if its anything inperticular u are feeding the child, if all else fails go to the doctors and he will give you a mild laxative try a lot of fresh juice and veg that should help but also you can give them too much and it will work in reverse good luck

I had this problem with my son who is now almost four, he was on lactulose and senna, neither made much difference, the lactulose actually caused severe stomach pains so we stopped that. The senna worked ok, but he had to have big doses to give him a huge clear out once a week. I changed white pasta/ bread etc to brown and gave him a large cup of apple juice a day plus plenty of beans and weetabix/branf flakes etc
after a year he just seemed to sort himself out, i cant be sure but the doc says its a possibility but the week he changed i started using the hovis best of both bread, et voila he started going every 3-4 days (thats good for my son who could go nearly 2 weeks!) i havnt looked back, ive kept his diet the same and although its pricey i always use the same bread!

Unrefined brown sugar (has to be unrefined) 1 teaspoon mixed with an ounce of cooled boiled water. Make sure you clean their teeth after.
Keep an eye on the constipation if it's been going on for so long. Doctors gloss over this all too often. My friends little girl suffered from terrible constipation and was ina lot of pain every time she tried to defecate. (Screaming and writhing around) Believe me it was horrific to watch her in so much pain. Repeated visits to the doctor with nothing done until she began vomiting faeces as it was backed up so far. Immediately rushed to the hospital, luckily caught just in time. She nearly died but has made a full recovery now.
Get a second opinion, just in case and especially if your child is in pain. No child should have to suffer with constipation.

Increase juices, such as apple and prune mixed with water. Prune juice is amazing for releiving constipation, also try several servings of fresh fruits and fresh vegatables. Is he/she with holding bowl movements deliberately over potty training? Some kids will and become constipated because they don't want to have an accident.

toddlers with constipation can be a phsycological thing which relates to the change from nappy to toilet. Plenty of fruit and fibre foods and s/he will be ok. but stop the laxative thing it only focuses on the problem. i presume the GP has ruled out any serious blockage of the bowel.

You could try getting your toddler to help you prepare a fruit smoothie, which may help to loosen things up, and as he/she has helped you prepare it, may be more inclined to drink it. failing that you could try a little Califig mixed in with weetabix and their usual milk to disguise the taste. You can but bottle s of Califig at most supermarkets or chemists. Please be careful with this though as it is strong although it is safe to use on toddlers, please read the instructions for use on how often and how much to give. Hope your toddler is feeling better soon.

Plenty of natural remedies, fruit mostly, rhubarb or syrup of figs. Depending on where you are living it could be the water. I had the same problem with both my children and started using a water filter (the cartridge type) and the constipation stopped.
