My favorite Chicago bakeries are:
Vanille Patisserie, 2229 N Clybourn Ave, 773-868-4574
Very fancy and stylish cakes that look amazing and have great flavor. The staff will sketch a cake design for you right before your eyes. They couldn't have been more helpful or fun to work with when we used them for a party, and the cake was delicious.
Sensational Bites, 3751 N Southport Ave, 773-248-2271
Super-friendly, more traditional designs and flavors, super moist and delicious cakes.
The Cake Girls, 2207 W. Belmont Ave, 773-404-3147

Amazing and beautiful designs; the home of fondant.
Lots of people love Bittersweet, and, in fact, they did my wedding cake (we had to use them because of where we held the reception); but the service we got was terrible and the cake wasn't particularly moist. It did look great. We wanted something a little out of the ordinary, but needed a small cake, and they clearly weren't interested in helping us since they weren't making much money off us. If you want a very basic cake, I'm sure they'd be fine, and I know many other people who've been very satisfied with them.
Sweet Thang is ok, but I wouldn't recommend them for a wedding cake, myself.

Yep! I know the owners. The cakes are awesome and the best I have ever tasted. Aracely's. They have 4 locations, with the 1 in Franklin Park being the HQ. Look them up. I highly recommend and the cakes are a work of art and VERY affordable

Sarenecki brothers catering in Chicago operates 5 halls and dependant on # of visitors should be on your funds. they're listed on the cyber web... seem them up. Rooms are sensible, yet older motif's. The nutrition is surprising! they'll do plate or kin style at a real looking fee.
