It depends on what you did to assault him. Yelling, spitting on, or even pushing a police officer is a pretty minor misdemeanor in most states. Full on slapping, kicking, punching or biting is also a misdemeanor, but carries a slightly higher penalty - in Missouri up to a year in jail. Running into a cop with your car is a pretty serious felony - especially if you are drunk. Missouri just passed a law that says you have to pull over to the LEFT side of the road if you see a Law Enforcement officer has someone pulled over on the right because so many have been killed like that.
If you shoot, stab, or use a dangerous weapon on a cop you can pretty much count on going to prison for the rest of your life. ON the upside, prisoners love cop killers! You'll be close to the top rung of the prison caste system and much less likely to be *** raped than, say, a wife beater.
Cops are expected to put up with a certain amount of abuse as just part of their job. So to be charged with assaulting a law enforcment officer, you REALLLLLY have to piss one off.

depends what kind of assault and which state. most states make it a felony to cause a simple assault on a police officer. If you use or attempt to use a weapon or cause serious harm then the felony would probably be in the first to second degree.

Do you fairly imagine getting the police mad at you is a sturdy theory? you've been no longer damage, basically made indignant. Take some deep breaths and get over it. Why supply them reason to target to get you decrease back?
