try http://www.petfinder.com or do a google search for small dog rescue in your area. petfinder will search all area shelters, and you can specify that you want a small dog. there are lots of great small dogs available. some people think that dogs from the shelter will have problems, or that there are no purebreds. this is just not true. there are a lot of purebred small breeds that have been given up because their owners got divorced or something. most shelters will let you adopt a dog for around $100, which includes shots and spaying / neutering. animal shelters do what they do because they love animals, not for the money. they will work with you to find the dog that is the best match for you, and won't just try to sell you the most expensive dog. also, most shelters will take the dog back, no questions asked, if you ever decide that it is not right for you.

If you try to find a purebred dog "cheap," you're likely to get a puppy farm dog or one with bad genes. When buying a new puppy (as opposed to adopting), if you're looking for a certain breed, it's almost always best to find breeders. Save money. It's better to buy a dog from a breeder that you know will be healthy and have a long life span than to go cheap and possibly have congenital health problems down the road.
Otherwise, consider adopting. Many rescue agencies can find a smaller breed for you, or you can go to the humane society to find one yourself. Look around, and if you ever get a bad feeling about a dog or the person selling it, go with your gut and find another place.

Yorkie's (Yorkshire Terrier) are really cute, but don't go for the so-called teacup yorkie's, they are over-bread to get them that small. You will end up with a dog with health and socialization problems. This doesn't just go for Yorkie, it goes for all toy breeds. I also really like Chihuahua's and Maltese's. If you are worried about prices, look for a mix of two of your fav breeds. Mixes are usually very strong and healthy dogs, and often have the best characteristics out of both breeds, and mixes can also be cheaper (although some mixes are very popular, like cockapoo's, and are therefor still expensive)

Please try to adopt you can find the cutest little dogs at your local human soicity. also you can go through a pet rescue as well. amd make sure the breed is good for your life style. if your a laid back person and you your not very active you may not want to get something like a jack russle or any terrier for that matter so check out the breeds study them see what would fit your life style the best also some little breeds aren't good with kid's. you might want to keep that in mind as well.
