It makes sense to tip them because they may be renting their space in the salon (which obviously costs money). How do you know for sure they make a "respectable" salary? It depends on how many clients they have. Sometimes clients cancel or just don't show up. Then, that's money the stylist was counting on, down the drain. Whenever a service is rendered, a tip is in order. It means you were satisfied w/the service and appreciate the job well-done. And, they actually don't make a salary. Their earnings depend on how many clients they have. That's not exactly a dependable way to earn money.

Allow me, the daughter of a hairdresser, to answer this. They don't make that good of money. The money they charge for the actual cut goes mainly to the business, and the tips are what they get to take home at the end of the day. Plus, it makes them much happier and treat you nicer the next time if you tip them.

I realize that sometimes it seems as though we are obligated to tip everyone these days, but it will help you in the long run. Your hairdresser will go to extremes to accomidate you( staying late to fit you into the schedule, getting you samples of new products, taking the extra time to make sure your hairstyle or color is perfect). They usually want the same people to return again and again and want you to recommend them to people you know for doing great work!!! It only makes you look good to tip if they do a good job.

It's kind of like tippin' a waitress. If they do a good job to make your day and visit, why can't you in turn make their day? People have become so selfish and stingy. Often times hair dressers don't WANT a tip or expect one. It's a nice little extra to their day. The people who say "they ain't gonna give them a tip no matter" clearly are selfish and have no idea what being kind is. I also bet that if their hair or food was MESSED up, they'd be the first people to walk out, ticked off that people messed up THEIR hair or THEIR food. That's hypocritical I'd say. But I bet if some "pimp" daddy offered them 100 dollars to do whatever, they'd be more then happy to oblige. I know I "ain't" going to want to help people like that....

Hairdressers do all the work and then their employer takes at least half of that. So they don't make as much as you think. Also, they rarely get medical benefits and almost never a retirement plan. And, they have to report tips on their taxes too.
And to Black_Barbie: I hope someday you need an emergency appointment and your hairdresser won't help you, you're lucky she hasn't butchered your hair...............YET!

I tip my hairdresser 20%. If the hairdresser is the same one that washes your hair (smaller salons), I provide somewhat greater desirable than 20%. no count if it somewhat is somebody different I provide not greater an 10% of the hair shrink to the hair washing gadget.

It's a faux pas (sorta a taboo/unwritten law type thing) to not tip a hairdresser or waiter. I mean, it would be considered rude not to. And really, do you know how much a hairdresser makes?
