Is this behavior new? If so, see the vet. If this has always been your cat's temperament, it's probably normal. I have a cat that used to be like that. I couldn't get her to play, not even with catnip. Still, I would hold her and she didn't object. Then I got a kitten. At first she would lounge around watching the kitten with a bored expression. Then she got so she would prick up her ears or even change position to keep watching the kitten. Finally she even started batting the kitten playfully once in a while. Then she even played with me with a string once in a while. She is still pretty sedentary compared to the new cat. I think that if you were very persistent in trying to play with her or get her attention with a string, it might have a similar effect. Cats just have different temperaments.

There is nothing to worry about. He is just being a cat. Do you expect him to respond good morning when you say it? He isn't watching TV with you because thats not what cats do. They lay around and sleep most of the time.

has he ALWAYS been this way? if so, there is no need to worry. maybe it's that you don't spend a whole lot of time with him. do you usually leave him alone for long periods of time? I'm sure when you go to work/ school that is the case. Try buying him treats. Indoor grass that he can munch on while he's away. A windowsill perch, catnip filled toys. things that he can play with while you are out and n ot at your place. good luck. also, talk to him as though he is the only one you love. when he DOES choose to be near you, do NOT lose that opportunity. allow him to sit wherever he wants. again, good luck

Don't forget they have very small brains and their eyes interpret things differently than ours. Plus they don't talk.
Your cat sounds normal.
LOL Productive? What do you want him to do go out and get a job or work for a charity? Hon, cat's are not productive animals. You really can't expect too much from your pet.
The purpose of having a pet is to have a cute companion. They eat, sleep and crap...similar to a baby or an invalid.

Give him a job with specific duties. Make sure he has a coffee break and a smoke break at least twice a day. Make sure he has all the amenities of health insurance and a 401k retirement plan or similar nest egg, and has at least 4 weeks vacation a year. And change the channel. He probably doesn't like what you're watching. Or you could figure he's a totally typical lazy, useless animal as all cats are, and accept it. Or you could kick him out and save yourself all that catfood and kitty-litter money. Or you could take him to a shrink for meds and group counseling. Oh well. God Bless you.

He's probably just really bored. You could try playing with him or get him a companion. If he's a house cat he's probably grown accustomed to being lazy and sleeping all the time. If you want him to be more active then you have to help him out. You'll both be happier in the long run.

You're kidding right. A cat sleeps like 18 hours a day. They aren't big tv watchers and aren't known to be overly friendly.
Have you given kitty any catnip lately. A fresh catnip mouse might be just the thing to get your fuzzy friend moving.

He may be depressed or have another mental disorder. My brother's cat kept eating his tail until no fur was left. Took him to a vet who gave him a mental disorder medication, and the symptoms stopped.
