As one who once worked in Catholic Charities I will give you this perspective. Certainly every order is different. Some are extremely large and some can just be composed of a handful of religious practitioners and thus their rules may vary based upon the requirements of the founder of the order and his or her interpretation of a particular saint or patron saint by which the order is based. Of the nuns I have met and worked with none (my, I almost spelled it nun) have ever smoked. However, a convent of an active order is a particularly odd situation. It is a magnate which attracts people from every walk of life who think that they are being led by God to do a mission. Sometimes people with personality disorders like those experiencing multiple personalities due to childhood trauma and every other psychological disturbance come into an order as do very very bright, well balanced people. An active order where sisters, brothers, and priests have to devote themselves selflessly to the poor at all times is an arduous mission and sometimes can cause psychological havoc to those who are involved in it for a long period of time. I would not be suprised if there are nuns who somoke to relieve themselves of the pressure of this noble cause

Average alcohol use is perfectly appropriate. Can we actually consider that Jesus and the apostles and Mary did not drink on the marriage ceremony feast of Cana? How do you believe Mary was the one who observed that they had run out of wine. Did Jesus create more wine in order that every body on the marriage ceremony would commit a sin with the aid of drinking it? If Jesus might serve wine at a marriage ceremony i do not suppose we have got to fear about drinking just a little. Oh and weren't they drinking wine on the last Supper? Drunkeness just isn't acceptable by means of a religious or someone else. Smoking is a tougher one to assess. From a well being standpoint I have no idea if there is the sort of thing as "smoking in moderation". In view that my father died of lung melanoma i do know that i'm not function with reference to smoking. I might be offended via a sister who smokes but i am also offended via any person who smokes.
