Wouldn't they know enough to just not ask it...and show the boss it's more important to treat the customers like people instead of mindless buying-machines?

I'm asking from the standpoint of the customers.

One thing people need to know is that the clerks are trained to suggestive sell. In fact they are required to. It's all part of the profit game. If a person buys a bag of chips the clerk would have to ask if the customer would like a soda or candy bar to go with it. If a person buys a pack of cigarettes the clerk would have to ask if the customer if they needed a lighter. I was in the retail business for 6 years and hated that part of the job. So from now on please do not take it out on the clerk. They are just doing what they are supposed to do.

It's called customer service. Unfortunately, some of these people tend to go overboard with that question.

When I went to Taco Bell, I was ordering through the drive-thru and after I ordered an item, the clerk would ask "is there anything else?". I had to keep saying "YES".

Me: I need two tacos.
Clerk: Is there anything else?
Me: Yes. One order of nachos.
Clerk: Is there anything else?
Me: YES! One kid's meal.
Clerk: Is there anything else?
Me: YES! There I need to order a few more things because I'm ordering for two more people. (I wanted to say "can you just shut up for a minute so I can give you my full order?")

You can't get too upset at fast food places. I don't want anything added to my order, if you know what I mean.

I used to have to ask that question also, but it was before the customer was ready to leave. Not after every sentence.

LOL I used to ask the same question all the time until I was at the other end of it as a check out clerk. They do not ask it to be rude, that is usually the training that they recieve, and is just a standard question that is used throughout the retail industry, not to upset you, but to perhaps remind you that maybe you are forgetting something that you did come there for. Also, a lot of companies will write-up their employees for not asking that one simple question, and after so many writeups for the same thing they can fire you. So next time that you are asked that question, just politely tell them no, and remember that they are just trying to do their job to the best of their ability, and hey ... who knows, maybe you were just about ready to walk out of the store and leave the one thing there that you came to get and they will of just reminded you.

Well, depending where you shop, most businesses make their associates ask that question. Just politely tell the clerk what you want and say that's all you need. Sometimes most folks just rattle off and when the clerk says, "Is there anything else", and then they reply "No". Then, "Oh wait..." That used to annoy the mess out of me. Just say what you need or want and be done with it.

Say "and nothing else" or "that is it!" before them.

Actually you shouldn't be angry at them for this. It is the fault of stupid people who order more after the clerk has totaled the sale. Then the clerk has to get a void. Then we wait longer in line. By them asking that simple question they save the rest of us a lot of time and aggravation.

You can't. In most places they are required by their employers to ask. I tried saying "& nothing else." at the end of giving my order (or no fries thank you) & they still asked. Several times I pointed out to them that I'd just answered the question & it didn't need to be asked. I was told that they were required to always ask. so, now I jsut let them ask. don't stress, be happy. :)

It's just protocole. I work for a call center in my country while studying, speaking with americans, and it is a mandatory question for every single call.
I assure you, it is much more annoying for the person who has to say it over and over again one hundred times a day, than for you, who just listens to it every once in a while.

Say Yes there is in fact, and tell them you wish you had a brand new Else. Where do they keep them? How much does an ELSE cost?

Train them to ask the pertinent question, what is it that your looking to buy? or What are you searching for, and can I help you find it?
