well it's like the same thing as going on a normal diet. you slowly phase out meat, like you would slowly phase out junk food. just eat a lot of vegtables and fruit but dont forget other things you neet like grain and stuff. you should have maybe one less serving of meat you have in a day and do that for about a week. after that just lessen the amount that you eat until you are used to not having it. it really works, i've done it myself a few year ago. sometimes you need to get certain vitamins though to get the nutrition you normally would from meat.

you said you wanted to lose weight by cutting meat out of your daily meals but sometimes that wont make you lose weight. just try exercising regularely too :)

Like a lot of other people have said, vegetarianism and weight loss are not synonymous. You can lose weight without becoming a vegetarian and it's hardly a guarantee that you won't gain weight if you do become one. You're really asking two separate questions.

First, how do I become a vegetarian? For me, I just stopped eating meat and that was that. If you're having trouble with that, try cutting out red meat first and then move on to poultry and seafood. It might help to ask yourself what your motivation is... if it's solely a weight loss thing, maybe you shouldn't bother (it takes some dedication because people will constantly question you and there are times when you will be challenged by restaurant menus, etc...) If you're concerned about animal welfare or about consuming the antibiotics, hormones and steroids that are given to animals, then do it any way that works for you. As long as you're eating a varied diet, you don't have to worry about not getting enough protein and nutrients on a veg diet.

Second, how do I lose weight? Regardless of whether you decide to go veg, just make sure that you are consistently burning more calories than you consume. Cloothe (sp?) already explained the 500 calorie a day thing... it's fairly simple. Eat a little less, exercise a little more. If you're not a healthy eater already, if should simply be a matter of replacing sugary snacks and empty calories with healthful, lower calorie options. If you already eat a very healthy diet, try cutting back portions a bit and stepping up the exercise.

There are things you need to concern. Losing weight in a healthy way or just to be thin? Vegetarian must not mean thin. I went on a diet by eating more and it works.

My trainer told me to cut sugar and fat, I did it slowly but I still maintain a suitable amount for my body. I break up meals into smaller portions, like eating 4-6 times a day.

Eat wheat bread, brown rice, and protein food.

Exercise/gym is a must, you should do it 3 times a week, 45 mins each time.

Read the nutrition facts, avoid too much fat/saturated and sugary food. Totally get rid of junk food. If you eat McDonald's, cut it down to once a month.

It seems hard, but it works. I wish I can give you more details but gotta go...

Okay well first things first (I am a vegitarian) you need to make a list of things without any meat (and if you want to be vegan, without dairy or fat from meat). For example, if you live near a trader joe's, I can make a grocery list for you if you like (if you need one email me at hmhcutieneo@yahoo.com). But it's not easy. You have to restrain yourself from a lot of things. Being vegetarian is VERY healthy, but you still need to get enough protien to survive, so it's tricky. If you are becoming vegetarian to lose weight, you don't need to. Just eat several small portions throughout the day, intead of fewer large portions. If you are becoming vegetarian because its what you truly believe is right, then make a grocery list, or email me, go to the store, buy ONLY WHAT IS ON THE LIST, and continue doing so. You should be fine.

Well you can lose weight w/out becoming a vegetarian. It's just a healthier lifestyle to have. You could slowly turn into a vegetarian...like start eating more veggies than meat and slowly work your way into becoming full vegetarian.

If you just want to lose weight, it's not necessary to become a vegetarian. Before eating, just drink 2 cups of water (or 1 big cup) so you won't be able to eat a lot during the meal. Try to eat seafood rather than meat cause seafood give you more calcium, but meat actually give you more protein and fat. It works for my sister cause just quit eating meat suddenly will make your body lacks of nutrition and you don't want that cause you still need energy to work and/or study. Eat a lot of fruit, don't eat too much yogurt cause that will make you get hungry easily. MOST IMPORTANT, EXERCISE!! Hit the gym at least once a week or running/jogging every other day help a lot!!!

Every time your meal is going to have a meat in it, cut away a third of what is there. Even from hot dogs, ham sandiches, etc. Do this for about a week or so. Then cut away half of what you would normally eat, and keep going until you feel you do not need to eat meat at all. Really the point of vegetarianism is not because you want to lose weight, its because you dont support the digestion of animals. It might be hard because your mind isn't really in it, but it may help to just think of poor little squealing pigs running away from the farmers who are going to kill them and put them on your plate for you to eat. lol.

I've been a vegetarian for about 6 years, buts it never been hard for me.
What you could try doing is just go for meatless options at each meal...like for example, if everyone else is eating hamburgers, get a boca burger. They can be quite tasty if they are seasoned and have good toppings. Or if you are eating spaghetti, go for the meatless kinds of sauce. There are a lot of meatless soy products out there that have some of the flavor of meat, so you could look into those if you crave meat.
My sister did this when she was trying to lose weight, and she also ate more fruits and veggies and less sugary food, and it seemed to work well for her.

See if you can find a support group or community group of some sort for vegetarians. Also try to find books at your library. There should be a lot. It's really not as simple as simply not eating meat because you have to make sure that you substitute things that will make up for the vitamins, minerals and protein you're going to be taking away when you remove the meat. That's really what it's about: substituting. You need to find out what to substitute it with.

This is how I became a vegetarian. Every week I would remove a type a meat from my diet. So the first week I said I would never eat beef again. Then the next week I stopped eating pork. It worked for me. And I did that until there was no more meat in my diet. Does that make sense?
