Depends on how you define "in shape." Swimming works lots of muscles that aren't worked by aerobic activity like running, so a man who can run a marathon may be a lousy swimmer. On the same line of thought, someone who can swim 10 miles a day may be a lousy runner. Your body adapts to whatever activity you do most. If you want to be an "in-shape" swimmer, you should be able to do at least 100 laps (2,500 yards). Most swimmers do 20 laps (500 yards) just for warm-up...

How fast are you going?
What stroke?
How long is the pool?

My advice? Go for an hour. Don't worry so much about LAPS as you should about how long you can do it for. If you can swim at a constant speed for 60-90 minutes, you're more than in shape.

on a swim team an olympic size pool is 50meters down and 50meters back. i swim about 3500 a day, but i know plenty of "in shape " people that can barely swim 50meters. you have to be conditioned for swimming and it doesn't really matter what kind of shape you are in on land.

Depends on how much you swim anyhow. and how long of a time you are giving yourself to do your laps. ( are you spending 30 mins or longer?)
