People like them so much because they're traditional. Very few people are willing to step outside the box.
I personally don't care for them. If I had to get a clear stone, I'd rather have a CZ which in my experience attending tons of jewelry shows, has alot more brilliance (technical term for sparkle) even though most people think CZ are the worst things ever. Otherwise I prefer gemstones.

I personally think its because that's what our society thinks as a whole. Personally I don't like them, I like the way they look, but the whole diamond issue feels wrong to me. I think its like anything in our society, not only is it a status symbol, its a tradition. Personally I say that people should pick whatever they want, but for many the default to diamonds goes back to status and tradition.

It's traditional (some people like that) and they are something that most of us will only get only one of in our lifetime.
Diamonds are not SOOOO PLAIN! My diamond ring was custom-made and I've never seen anything like it. It's beautiful. Who cares about selling them back. Why would I want to sell back my engagement ring or be concerned with the buy-back price? It's something my fiance gave me that I consider priceless because it came from him and it is something he gave me when he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. If it had been a ruby or emerald or black onyx, I would think of it the same way. Priceless because of why I have it.
I'm not "obsessed" with diamonds like some girls are, but I do think they are classic and beautiful and there isn't another stone that I would have wanted more to have in my engagement ring.
People have different tastes, so I can understand why some wouldn't care anything about having a diamond. Think about it. Would everyone like to have the type of jewelry or type of stone that you would like in a ring? Probably not. Everyone is different. :)

i agree, diamonds used to be a girls best friend because u used to be able to sell them for good money. now a days there is just so many of them and some of them finance terrorism that thay are not worth as much, kinda like gold. give me a perfictly cut colored stone set in silver or white gold, and of course Tahitian pearls and I'm happy.

I don't think there are plain, I love my diamonds in my engagement ring & wedding band. Yes it may be a status symbol or something, but who cares. We are Americans and we like status, and we like our stuff. Girls will always want diamonds

I personally like anything sparkly, but I'm assuming you are talking about for engagement rings and wedding bands. To each his or her own. Diamonds are traditional and their hardness (geologically) symbolizes the longevity of love.

Sorry, but I love my engagement and wedding rings. I always will because my husband and I went together, he picked them out and I loved them. Then he picked his wedding band out. It is timeless, classic and sentimental for me.
Obviously, your partner doesn't buy you jewelry - or you don't have a partner. I can hear the resent and jealousy in your tone.
