If people are so busy that they can't be bothered at home, at work, or in their car, why don't they just save themselves money by not having it and buy a phone card or something like that?

LOL the problem I'm talking about is trying to call someone on their cell when I need to discuss things with them and getting a voicemail message every time instead. I have no beef with ppl having voicemail as long as they consistantly have some or another time during the day where I can consistantly expect them to answer the phone, because if there is an urgent matter that I need to talk to them about, hearing their voicemail message will be nothing short of an annoyance in such a situation.

Just because a phone rings does not mean you have to answer it. You should not be a slave to your phone. That is why there is voice mail. If I can't or won't take a call, that is why I pay for voice mail. Now I can return a call when it is convenient for me.

Why should I take a call on my cell phone from a gabber if I am in danger of running up my minutes? I can get the message and call them back at off peak.

If I have business deal going on, I don't want to take a call from just anyone.

Having said that, it is rude not to return calls in a timely manner. I would say at least with in a day or two the calls should be returned.

It's not that they are too busy. Sometimes, you just really can't answer the phone. Not all people have cell phones or call display. So they have an answering machine in case they miss an important call.

Sometimes you're taking a crap and you choose not to answer, that's when voice mail comes in handy, so you can get back to the person who called you at such inconvenient time.

Ah but don't forget Voicemail can be good if you are on another call of if you temporarily go in a blackspot, eg on a train, and someone calls you.

The purpose of voice mail is to avoid the crap out of us. You're not going to believe this but, I do not have answaring machine, call waiting or voice mail on our house phone. They can just call back.

the purpose of voicemail is to let the individual know that we called and need to speak with them for whatever reason and when they have the time to call back

I check my Caller ID when someone calls and if it's an 800 number or unknown number, I don't answer it and let it go to VM. It comes in handy when avoiding telemarketers.
